The Mind-Body-Spirit Connection: Holistic Health for Total Well-Being

5/21/2023

Holistic health & the mind-body-spirit connection
One thing that sets a holistic health approach apart from the conventional allopathic medicine model is its recognition that everything is connected - and not just the physical aspects of health, but also mental and spiritual factors as well.

Holistic health inherently implies that the mind, body, and spirit are interconnected and must be addressed as a whole to achieve optimal well-being. This perspective recognizes that our physical health is intimately linked to our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, and that each aspect impacts the others in profound ways.

In today's post, we will explore these connections, and how we can use them to improve our overall health and well-being.

[Video] How to Think Like a Monk for Peace & Purpose

11/14/2021

How to think like a monk
In our modern, fast-paced culture, it seems we are encouraged to always be chasing happiness. The next shiny object surely will be the answer we seek (or so the marketers tell us). In this never-ending quest for peace, happiness, and balance, we often neglect or ignore the very things that would give them to us. Instead of focusing on building strong and fulfilling relationships, serving others, or appreciating the wondrous world around us, we constantly chase after the images in our minds of what "success" should look like, or what accomplishments we should be achieving.

This is a vicious cycle, which not only leads to stress, dissatisfaction and unhappiness, but which can also impact our physical and mental health.

I have greatly been enjoying the book Think Like a Monk, by Jay Shetty, and I was excited to find an interview with him to share with you. In this episode of The Doctor's Farmacy, Dr. Mark Hyman talks with Jay about how to uncover your true passion and purpose, and live a life that is deeply meaningful to you, rather than constantly chasing an image that you believe is expected of you by others.

During their conversation, Jay shares important lessons he learned during his years as a practicing monk, and how we can apply them in our own lives to help reduce stress, improve our relationships, overcome negative thoughts and habits, and tap into the deep well of calm, peace, and purpose that we all hold within us. Check it out below!

3 Meaningful Resolutions for 2020

1/12/2020

I'm still wrapping my brain around the fact that it's 2020... It seems like a momentous number. We are now entering the third decade of the 21st century! 2010 seems like it was just a couple of years ago, and it's hard to believe how fast the past decade has flown by!

I don't always make resolutions... Sometimes I just set goals instead. But this year, I felt like resolutions were resonating with me more strongly, so below are my top 3 for 2020.

But first, you may be wondering, what's the difference between a goal and a resolution? There may be varying opinions out there, but for me, a goal usually has a specific endpoint and desired result, whereas, a resolution is ongoing. For example, a goal may be to lose 20 pounds by December 31st, while a resolution would be to work out at least 3x per week, or to call my mom at least once a month, etc..

However, when making a resolution, try to make them actually mean something. Too often we just make the same resolutions as last year (which we didn't keep), or throw something out there like, "I'm going to exercise more" just because we think we should. Think about how you want to grow as a person this year, or what area of health you would like to improve, or whether your relationships could use some nurturing, and then make a resolution that you will actually keep because it means something to you - not because you feel like you "should"!

If you haven't made any resolutions yet for this year, check mine out below for some inspiration, and feel free to share your own as well!

Giving Thanks for 2019

Gratitude
Well, folks, it's that time of year again! For the past several years, I have posted a "gratitude list" on Thanksgiving weekend every year. I was feeling a little lazy (and tired) this weekend after our visitors departed and the house was quiet again, and I thought of skipping it - but then I thought, I can't skip the gratitude list! It's such an important tradition on this blog! :-)

So here it is - my gratitude list for 2019 - one of the busiest, most tumultuous years of my life thus far...

Between transitioning to a new job with a new company, to managing the bountiful garden amid multiple road trips across the country, and replacing the roof on our house, to my husband breaking his wrist this fall, 2019 has been a year particularly filled with stresses and challenges, excitement and anxiety, sadness and joy. It has also brought us so very many things to be thankful for!

Gratitude List
As the year winds down, it's time for my annual Gratitude List! Below I have listed three of the things I am especially grateful for this year. I encourage you to read over my thoughts as inspiration for making your own Gratitude List! I firmly believe that gratitude is one of the most powerful forces in the universe, and most ancient traditions and religions will back me up on that.

What are you grateful for this year?

If you have trouble making a list, you may need to spend time regularly thinking about this topic to cultivate a more grateful and positive state of mind. You will find it will benefit every area of your life!

Holistic Health
Holistic health isn't really holistic unless it considers every aspect of your being - not just your physical health. In today's post, I will discuss the importance of finding a healthy and balanced mindset - an often neglected area, but perhaps the most important element of enjoying holistic health in all areas of your life.

Ask yourself - are you happy and content with your life? Are you mentally and emotionally happy as well as physically? And if the answer is no, what is holding you back?

Until you can answer in the affirmative, you have not achieved true holistic health.

7 Reasons Why Spirituality Is Essential For a Truly Balanced & Happy Life

Benefits of spirituality
We often talk about the other aspects of holistic living - good health, proper financial balance, happy and fulfilling relationships, etc., but although these are all important pillars, we can't forget that spirituality is an essential piece of the puzzle. Whatever spiritual practices you choose to follow, having this connection to something higher and outside of yourself is necessary if we want to be truly happy and fulfilled and have a complete and balanced life.

As this article mentions, "Happiness, is in part, a byproduct of achievement best gained when we’re working from something and for something larger than ourselves."

No matter how successful we are in the other areas of our lives, without a sense of a connection to this "something larger," it will be hard to find true meaning and purpose.

Here are 7 reasons why a daily spiritual practice will make your life happier and more complete:

7 Reasons to Embrace a Holistic Lifestyle

Holistic living benefits
In the years since I started this site, I have come to realize that holistic living is not just a way of life that benefits those who practice it, but it also impacts the health of the planet as a whole. Living holistically doesn't just mean taking daily steps to lead a more healthy, balanced life - it also means respecting the natural world around you, and learning to recognize your place in it, as well as its impact on you.

When you truly begin to live in a holistic manner, you recognize the connections between yourself and others, as well as the natural world. By doing so, you find a deeper sense of peace and purpose in the world, and you also learn to recognize your body's natural needs and take care of yourself in a gentler and more loving way.

Here are 7 awesome benefits of living a holistic lifestyle:

Can You Change Your Brain?

Meditation
Between the craziness of the start of gardening season, and getting ready to launch a new website, I've been a bit overwhelmed lately, to say the least! I think it's time to revisit my meditation audios, which I have gotten out of the habit of using....

I discovered Holosync a few years ago, and went through the whole program over the course of about a year. I didn't necessarily experience all of the  benefits that other users have reported, but I did find some real improvements in several areas through simply listening to the recordings every night.

One big change was that I became less of a procrastinator. This did take a bit of focus, but I found it much easier to change this habit than I had expected, and now I rarely procrastinate anymore - I don't even think about it - I just get stuff done!

Bringing Home the Bacon: The Psychology of Shopping

4/24/2016

Shopping
As I was driving home the other day, the passenger's seat piled high with bags of rice noodles, soy and fish sauce, coconut milk, and other goodies from my quarterly trip to the Asian supermarket (stocking up for light summer Thai soups & curries!), I began reflecting on the peculiar pleasure that comes from shopping.

We all know it's fun to shop - heck, some even call it "retail therapy" it feels so good! Sure, there are some people who go overboard with it - even becoming "addicted" to shopping. (And I'm not making light of that at all - it can be a very dangerous problem that can get people into a lot of financial trouble.) And in some cases there are deeper psychological issues at work. But in general, we all just like to shop!

So why is that, exactly? What is it about spending money or buying "stuff" that gives us that little jolt, or "rush" if you will, of satisfaction?
